A basic guide to weather in Devon throughout the year

Weather is an important consideration to take into account when it comes to choosing a holiday destination. Devon, located in the south western portion of the United Kingdom, is an excellent and beautiful place to visit, with a fairly stable climate. Considered by the Koppen Climate Classification system to be an oceanic climate, this makes Devon have a fairly mild climate.

In Devon, one can expect cool, but not unbearably cold winters, and warm, but not unbearably warm either. Again, it is a fairly moderate climate, but precipitation is a factor throughout the year, as it is in many oceanic climates. More precipitation generally falls in winter than in summer. Winter temperatures generally do not get much below freezing and in the summer, it rarely gets above 75 degrees (F) making this a wonderful and mild climate year round.

One of the warmest places in England, Devon is also one of the windiest ones as well, which is not uncommon for a coastal climate. In the lower altitudes, less precipitation is noticed and in the higher altitudes, the opposite is the case. In lower altitudes, summer temperatures are also higher and winter temperatures are often colder. The areas of lower altitudes experience less snow fall and are the least windy places in the region.

On the coastal areas, temperatures tend to be more steady and lower in the summer, but not as cold in the winter as elsewhere. There is less precipitation along the coasts as well. These are generally the windiest areas of the region, but also experience the highest amount of annual sunlight.

Moorland areas located inland receive the largest amount of rainfall and precipitation in general due to the higher altitudes of these areas. These areas get the greatest amounts of snowfall and have some of the colder temperatures in the area. The difference in the amounts of precipitation experienced in the Moorland as compared with the rest of the region can be twice as high as the rest of the region, due to the high altitude. These areas are often as windy as the coastline and receive the least amount of sunshine.

Overall, the year round climate of Devon is very mild and coastal in classification. This means that there are few extremes in temperature variation. With mild summers and winters, but more precipitation on average than in more temperate areas, Devon has a great climate, and makes for a wonderful place to visit year round
