To take in some of Devon´s best architecture, visit the historic town of Exeter

As a town with a deep and rich history, it should come as no surprise that the town of Exeter boasts some of Devon´s best and most beautiful architecture. The perfect place for a weekend getaway or a lovely day trip from anywhere in Devon, the sights, steeped in history, are sure to leave with breathless with awe and wonder.

One shouldn´t be surprised to find such rich architecture and storied history. Exeter, first founded by the Romans, still boasts part of the city walls that were constructed way back in 200 AD as fortification and protection for the city. While this wall has, obviously, not survived in its entirety for all this time, still has many bits remaining today. It is an amazing feeling to look upon something so very old, from one of the biggest and most successful empires in civilization.

There are a good many religious-related monuments, cathedrals, and other buildings there that are rich in history and lovely to the eye as well. From the gorgeous and ornately designed Cathedral Church of St. Peter, surrounded by luscious open green spaces, or the remains of what was once a Benedictine Monastery, the St. Nicholas Priory, this just the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to beautiful bits of ancient architecture that are religious in nature.

There are also a good number of non-secular architectural beauties to behold in the rich and lovely town of Exeter. To see the oldest, still standing, municipal building in the city, dating all the way back to the mid-1300s, visit the Guildhall, on the High Street, and find yourself taken back in time. It is also a wonderful idea to visit the Quayside of Exeter where historical warehouses and other industrial buildings are still being used, having been converted into retail establishments.

With a number of castles surrounded by beautiful gardens, Exeter is a place of wonder and a feast for the eyes for the architecture lover. A short day trip or a weekend getaway, Exeter is a place that has more than meets the eye - with a rich history, modern conveniences, and beautiful buildings and landscapes -and once you´ve visited, you´ll likely be drawn back again and again.
