Visit Plymouth for a trip to a city that still stays true to Its Naval roots
Plymouth, a storied town in southern Devon, is the town from which the English sent their fated ships of voyagers to the New World. With its long history, the sea has, and still is, an important part of everyday life for the citizens of Plymouth. For those with a fondness for the water, and all that goes with it, or who take an interest in naval history, Plymouth is a place to find all of this, and even more.
One of the largest cities in Devon, Plymouth is a city that is steeped in both the old and the new, but the importance of the sea on their economy is something that has not changed through the long and storied history of the town.
From sending out those fateful ships "across the pond" to the New World, the town of Plymouth was vitally important as a shipping port and shipbuilding town that was the landing spot for many of the imports from the Americas. The importance of this shipping port to the economy of not just Plymouth, but the whole of England, made it a target for destruction during World War II - it was partially destroyed during what is referred to as the "Plymouth Blitz", but was subsequently rebuilt.
A highly important location, especially with regard to the navy, this town has a long and proud history of providing services and accommodations to the various naval units who have, for some period of time or another, made Plymouth their home. All of this history, in its full richness, can be felt by visiting any of the memorials or taking part in the many guided tours offered throughout the city.
To get a feel for the old ways of the city, take a stroll through Barbican, the so-called "Medieval" part of the city. Here you can find quaint, narrow streets of old, along with old style architecture that now houses a variety of antique and other niche retail locations.
And of course, with as rich of a naval history as a town like Plymouth has, this is the perfect place to go for a water related outing. Whether you want to take a boat trip along the river, or simply watch the workers in on the dockyards in action, there are many opportunities just waiting to be taken advantage of on a trip to Plymouth.
